Our Team

Duratherm is led by President and owner, Tim Downing and Vice President, Keith Birden.  For these two, Duratherm is more than just a career – it has been their life’s work for over 40 years each.   While they respectively bring a wealth of experience and expert knowledge to the table, it comes from decidedly different perspectives.  Tim is the face of the business inside the facility in Vassalboro, ME.  He walks the production floor daily—not simply to oversee operations, but to stay connected to the people and the process. He knows each team member and understands the value of their individual contributions. Keith is the face of the business outside of the facility, in architect’s offices, and visiting job sites from coast to coast.  His deep passion for architecture fuels and shapes every project he touches.  Guided by a shared commitment for excellence, this collaborative duo believes that lasting success comes from continuously improving both the product and the people behind it. Their combined expertise and complementary strengths create a powerful partnership—driving innovation, elevating customer satisfaction, and fostering a positive, high-performing environment for the entire team.

Duratherm employees come from diverse backgrounds, each bringing indispensable skills and expertise that are vital to our operations.  We take pride in the fact that the average tenure of our team members is over 16 years, with our management team averaging an impressive 23 years.   Experience is key, and it’s something we have in abundance throughout the organization.

While we may be small, we are mighty.  We like to say, we are big enough to get the job done, but small enough to turn on a dime.  With direct access to ownership and less layers of management, we can quickly pivot, adapt to changes, and get the project done without the delays or complexities found within larger organizations.

Tim Downing

President

Tim Downing joined Duratherm in 1984 after earning his degree in Business Finance from the University of Maine. A proud Mainer, Tim has always valued his small-town roots and knew early on that his path did not lie in the big city. He began his career at Duratherm right out of college and was soon promoted to Corporate Controller. While finance seemed like the obvious track, it was in this role that Tim discovered his true passion: manufacturing. Seeing firsthand how the industry supports local economies and creates meaningful opportunities for families was a turning point in his career. In 1994 Tim decided to roll the dice and bet on Duratherm. Despite a downturn in business, his unwavering belief in the company’s potential led him to risk everything to become majority owner and assume the role of President. For over 30 years, Tim has led with purpose, growing Duratherm into a respected name in architectural windows and doors while remaining deeply connected to his team and community.

Keith Birden

Vice President

Keith Birden has been with Duratherm since joining the team in 1981. His great admiration and love for architecture inspired him to study it at Vermont Tech College. While working for the Architectural Division of the State of Connecticut, he met Duratherm founder Phil Cole on a job site. With Phil’s keen sense of character and a knack for identifying great talent, Keith was hired on the spot for outside sales. While Keith intended this new opportunity to be a transitional job, it has been well over 40 years, and he is still going strong. Keith is in his element when he is deep into a fenestration challenge, finding solutions without compromise, to meet the architectural design intent. Architecture is his passion – running through his veins, fueling both his professional and personal life. At work, it is the challenge of solving complex designs, while at home, it’s pure admiration for the buildings and the people who create them. When you do what you love, work no longer feels like work.
